What Halloween used to mean.
October 30, 2008 on 12:44 am | In Holiday Meanings | No CommentsWith Halloween on Friday this year, I thought I would remind everyone of what Halloween used to mean before everyone goes trick-or-treating. I hope no one minds if I mix a bit of religion into this post, but the fact is that this holiday used to have a very religious aspect.
This holiday started back in the Middle Ages (Ad 1300’s). People back then were scared of spirits and ghosts, even with the Church being a deep part of their lives. When I said “Church”, I didn’t mean any church, but the Roman Catholic Church. You see November 1st was declared All Saints Day (it still is), and people were scared the previous night. Why? They believed that those who had died came back the previous night (October 31st) to haunt those whom they recognized. So they put disguises on that day to confuse the ghosts and spirits, hoping that the ghosts and spirits whould think they were someone else. This day came to be known as All Hallow’s Eve, which got shorten to the modern day Halloween. This is where the practice of wearing a costume on October 31st, Halloween, came to be. So, in a way, it’s is not wrong or immoral to wear a costume on Halloween. In fact, it’s honoring a very old tradition.
Also some religions believe that October 31st is a very powerful day for magic and dark practices. These religions are not any ordinary person would recognize though, because they are Druids and other ancient religions from before the time of Christ and the rise of Christianity and Islam. They usually practice what they consider to be sacred rites on this night. It is also why animal shelters usually refuse to allow the adoption of black cats and other certain animals during this month, because these religions would want to use the animals in their rites.
Have a happy and safe Halloween!
Anyone for a game via email?
October 26, 2008 on 1:55 am | In Asides, Personal | No CommentsIf you would like to play me a game of chess via email, please contact me. I would love to get a game going. I will admit I am a beginner, but I have played the computer. If you don’t want to play chess, I am also willing to play Scrabble or Yahtzee via email as well.
Is it time for a new OS?
October 16, 2008 on 1:13 pm | In Computers/Networking, Programming | No CommentsIf you voted yes for the previous question, then I have a group for you! It is called New Operating System Programmers, and it is for those who either want to help program it, or for those who want to help support the cause. For those who have Facebook, I’ve created this group. I’ve linked the two together. For those who prefer Google’s Groups to Yahoo’s, I’ve created a group here and linked it to the others. I really hope people get behind this effort.
I am a bit blue today.
October 15, 2008 on 11:33 am | In Personal | No CommentsI am feeling a bit blue today, as I have learned that my grandpa on my mom’s side could pass away any day. The rest of my family is planning to attend his funeral when that happens, but I won’t. I do not attend funerals. I can’t grieve at them, and hate the feeling around one. I will just stay home if that happens, and grieve at home.
I can be thankful that I will be seeing him again in heaven one day.
Thankfully, I have many good memories of this pair of grandparents. I always knew I could turn to them for support, and they always were happy to see us when the family visited. Thanks to them, I was able to purchase my first computer (an Asus TravelMate 4000 that I sold to my mom after getting my desktop).
How to send certain messages to the leaders.
October 13, 2008 on 7:37 pm | In Canadian Politics | No CommentsThere are 2 messages we need to send to the leaders. One is for all of them, and the other is for Harper and the Conservatives only.
The citizens of the riding of Central Nova can send the message that you should only offer what you can deliver on by re-electing Peter MacKay as their Member of Parliament. Stephane Dion promised Elizabeth May that he would help get her elected here. Prove him wrong, and re-elect MacKay to represent you in Parliament.
The citizens of the riding of Edmonton-Sherwood Park can send a message to Stephen Harper and the Conservatives that Alberta is not 100% safe. They can do this by electing James Ford as their Member of Parliament. He is running as an Independent, but has Conservative values. He is the best one to send to Ottawa to wake up Harper and his Conservatives that Alberta’s 28 seats are not guaranteed Conservative at election time.
Remember to get out tomorrow and cast your ballot!
Why I will not likely ever vote…
October 11, 2008 on 5:38 pm | In Canadian Politics | No CommentsLiberal:
- I may not be old enough to remember the National Energy Program, but I’ve heard what it did to my home province of Alberta in the 1970’s. Who was in charge? Pierre Elliot Trudeau, a Liberal.
- They will impose their “Green Shift” and halt Alberta’s economy.
- When the Liberals were in power, they ignored Alberta and the rest of the West.
New Democratic Party:
- Ideas that will clearly put Canada deeper into debt.
- They want to tax businesses, when they clearly need the government’s help.
- Also would put in a ecological plan that would ruin Alberta’s economy.
Green:
- Clearly, I will never vote for them, as they care too much about the ecology.
- They will never form a government, so why bother to vote for them?
Cleearly, I am stuck voting Conservative this election, and pretty much that way in elections to come, unless another party runs a candidate or I decide to run for another party.
