What a Leader Should Be

I remember posting about this topic, but then I lost it when I switched blogging systems. So I figured I should post it again, as the topic after this one will be covering what my vision for Canada is. Yeah, some may say that’s a political topic, but I’m going to be open with what I post here. Like it or not, that is part of who I am. ;)

Anyways, back to the topic of this post. A leader should have several qualities in my books, and here’s what I think they should be:

  • A leader needs to have a vision. Something that clearly defines what they want to do as a leader. A vision can be short or long term, as long as it’s clear and concise.
  • A leader needs to be just. That means, not condemning someone until they are proven guilty, and be willing to listen to both sides of the story – both the accuser and the accused.
  • A leader needs to be honest. That means willing to admit his or her weaknesses, so that others can help him or her overcome them.
  • A leader must be trustworthy, and this ties in with the previous trait of honest, cause if someone is not honest, how can anyone trust them? The answer is simple: They cannot.
  • A leader must be bold – be willing to take risks that others would not normally take.
  • A leader must also have caution – to know when a risk is too big to take.
  • A leader must be clear and concise. This means he or she must be able to get people to understand what they are saying.
  • A leader must be faithful. S/he must stick to what they believe in, even when others say the situation looks hopeless, yet be willing to admit defeat when it’s inevitable.

These are the characteristics I believe a leader should possess. It should not matter how one looks (though that can affect how people view the person), but how one acts.
